Grandchild and grandparent look forward to a bright futureMarian Lucille Herndon McQuade envisioned three purposes for National Grandparents Day:

  • To honor grandparents;
  • To give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children’s children; and
  • To help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer.

At Ferguson-Easley Elementary School we honored our grandparents on September 21st. Ms. Eloise Melvin, parent facilitator, wanted to affirm the identity and importance of grandparents.  She organized the celebration to proclaim “Looking Forward With Our Grandparents” is a vital way to show that grandparents do play a role in families and in schools.

McQuade worked to establish and publicize this national holiday that started officially in 1979 when President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the first Sunday after Labor Day each year as National Grandparents Day (September was chosen to signify the “autumn” years of life).
