2027 Beginning Teacher of the Year (Pictured below)
Former U.S. Army veteran Charles Houston, a seventh-grade social studies teacher at New Century International Middle School, was named Beginning Teacher of the Year—an honor he calls more meaningful than his military awards.
Carrying on a multi-generational legacy established by his mother, Dorothy Maggie Houston (a 60-year teaching veteran), and his grandmother, Houston credited their inspiration, noting that collaborating on first-year lesson plans provided a deeply personal bonding experience after his father's death. In his classroom, Houston empowers students—whom he calls jali (storytellers)—through a hands-on, student-led civic model where they campaign, debate, and collaboratively solve problems.
Congratulations, Mr. Houston!
